Winter in Japan means streets, gardens and theme parks covered in lights. Here are four winter illuminations for the 2026–2027 season — from snowy Sapporo to Tokyo and Mie — with their dates, so you can fit one into your trip.

Sapporo White Illumination (Sapporo, Hokkaido)

Lights spread across several venues in central Sapporo, so you can walk from one to the next through the snowy city. If you want to see the main Odori venue, plan your visit before Christmas.

  • Odori venue: November 20 – December 25, 2026
  • Ekimae-dori venue: November 20, 2026 – February 11, 2027
  • Minami-ichijo-dori, Sapporo Kita 3-jo Plaza (Akapla) and Sapporo Station South Exit Plaza venues: November 20, 2026 – March 14, 2027
  • Nakajima Park venue: early to late January 2027 (planned)
  • Lighting hours may change — check the official website

MIDTOWN CHRISTMAS 2026 (Tokyo Midtown, Roppongi/Akasaka)

Tokyo Midtown's Christmas event centers on its garden, with a Christmas tree, a walk of lights and an outdoor ice rink. It's an easy evening stop if you're staying in central Tokyo.

  • Event period: November 26 – December 25, 2026 (dates differ by attraction)
  • Illumination hours: 17:00 – 23:00
  • The Christmas tree uses a real fir tree, about 8.5 m tall (until December 25)
  • Walk of lights with about 340,000 lights: November 26, 2026 – February 23, 2027
  • Outdoor ice rink: December 5, 2026 – February 23, 2027 (closed on January 1, 2027)

An illumination at the Yomiuriland amusement park in western Tokyo. It runs into spring, so it's a good option if you're visiting Japan after the holidays.

  • Period: October 29, 2026 – April 4, 2027
  • Hours: 16:00 – 20:30 (varies by date)
  • Closed on irregular days — check the official website

Nabana no Sato Illumination (Kuwana, Mie)

Nabana no Sato in Mie Prefecture runs one of the longest illumination seasons in Japan. It's a popular trip from Nagoya.

  • Period: October 17, 2026 – May 31, 2027
  • Closed: January 6 and 7, 2027
  • December 23–25: special opening from 15:00 with first-come, limited, date-specified tickets that must be bought in advance at convenience stores

Tips for enjoying winter lights in Japan

  • Dress warmly — especially in Sapporo, where it's snowy in winter
  • Weekday evenings are often calmer than weekends and the days just before Christmas
  • Check the end date of each venue: some finish on December 25, while others run until spring
