Fireworks in Japan aren't only a summer thing. The hot spring town of Atami holds its sea fireworks show over Atami Bay in autumn and winter too — free to watch, with no paid seats this year. Here are the 2026–2027 dates and tips from the Atami City Tourism Association.
Remaining dates for 2026–2027
- Sunday, November 8, 2026
- Monday, November 23, 2026 (national holiday)
- Sunday, December 6, 2026
- Friday, December 25, 2026 (Christmas Day)
- Sunday, February 21, 2027
Each show runs for about 20 minutes, from 8:20 p.m. to 8:40 p.m. The fireworks go ahead even in rain. The show is known for its powerful sound, which echoes around Atami Bay.
Where to watch
- You can watch from anywhere along the shore between Sun Beach and Atami Port
- The official site recommends the sand at Atami Sun Beach, where you can see the whole show (about 15 minutes' walk from JR Atami Station)
- Shinsui Park's first section gets very crowded, and saving spots with sheets is not allowed there
- There are no paid viewing seats in 2026, so watching is free
Tips for a smooth trip
- Take the train: parking in town fills up on fireworks days
- Buy your return ticket in advance — Atami Station gets very busy right after the show, so the city asks visitors to stagger their trip home between about 9 and 10 p.m.
- Heading toward Ito or Shimoda? The city suggests using JR Kinomiya Station instead
- Keep an eye on your bags in the crowd
